Frequently Asked Questions
-
Why is the District no longer making changes to boundaries?
The most recent enrollment projections from Fall of 2023 indicate an unexpected decline in enrollment due to lowering birth rates. As fewer students are born in the district, the number of students enrolling in Kirkwood schools is also predicted to decrease. With this new data, it appears we will achieve one of our main priorities of being close to 85% utilization in each elementary school with no boundary modifications by the 2028-29 school year.
-
How does the district project future enrollment?
The District regularly partners with experts to complete demographic studies that estimate future resident student enrollment projections. Those studies utilize birth rate, local trends and capture rate (the percentage of children who are born in the district footprint AND enroll in Kirkwood schools).
-
Will the district be revisiting making updates to the boundaries?
We will remain focused on being responsive to updated data and information as it becomes available. In the coming months, we will look to explore opportunities to address priority areas identified by the boundary adjustment committee and through our feedback process.
-
What about Prop R construction? Was it needed if there are no changes to boundaries?
Prop R construction allowed for safety and accessibility improvements at every Kirkwood school. Additionally, much of the construction focused on alleviating current overcrowding based on the best information available at the time. At the conclusion of Prop R construction, the vast majority of spaces will be immediately utilized for current student learning needs. New spaces will also ensure we’re maximizing every opportunity to serve students in unique ways.
-
Is the curriculum consistent at all Kirkwood elementary and middle schools?
Yes. Anyone can visit kirkwoodschools.org/curriculum to learn more about the classes and courses offered to students at all levels.
-
Are class sizes the same across all Kirkwood schools?
All schools fall under the same classroom size guidelines. Class sizes are reviewed several times prior to the start of the school year.
-
Do all Kirkwood schools have the exact same activities and classroom experiences?
Kirkwood has a rich history of autonomous experiences at each of our schools, creating a diverse and unique culture to serve the needs of the students in the building. The experiences students have with the curriculum can vary depending on a variety of factors, but all KSD students have the opportunity to experience rigorous and engaging learning to achieve the same academic goals.
