• Sixth Grade Orchestra

    Sixth Grade Orchestra is offered for students playing violin, viola, cello, and bass. Students choosing to participate in the advanced sixth grade orchestra must have at least 1 year of prior experience with the completion of Essential Elements Book 1 or equivalent.  Students will continue learning skills in tone production, note reading (rhythmic and melodic), scales, and bowings.  Emphasis will be placed on good technique, left and right-hand posture, vibrato, and an introduction to shifting and ensemble playing.  Students will learn a variety of orchestra music and the class will perform at the Winter and Spring Performance Nights, as well as Festival of Strings (at KHS).

  • Seventh Grade Orchestra

    Seventh Grade Orchestra is offered to students with at least one year of prior experience in orchestra, including the completion of Essential Elements Book 2.  Students will develop skills that lead to intermediate levels of proficiency in technique on their instrument.  They will gain an understanding of music theory as it pertains to their instrument and continue to experience a variety of literature for the modern band/orchestra. Students will continue developing their skills in tone production, note reading (rhythmic and melodic), scales, and bowings.  Emphasis will be placed on advanced techniques such as shifting, theory, two-octave scales/arpeggios/thirds, music theory, and composer history.  Members will have opportunities to perform solos and small ensemble literature as well as large ensemble selections to be performed at required concerts and festivals.

  • Eighth Grade Orchestra

    Eighth Grade Orchestra is offered to students with at least two years of prior experience in orchestra, including the completion of Essential Techniques Book 3.  Students will develop skills that lead to intermediate levels of proficiency in technique on their instrument.  They will gain an understanding of music theory as it pertains to their instrument and continue to experience a variety of literature for the modern band/orchestra. Students will continue developing skills in tone production, note reading (rhythmic and melodic), scales, and bowings.  Emphasis will be placed on advanced techniques such as shifting, theory, three-octave scales/arpeggios, orchestral excerpts in preparation for the KHS Orchestra auditions, sight-reading, music theory, composer history, and genres. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the annual solo and small ensemble festival and receive feedback from a judge.
