• Math Placement Information

If you prefer that your student not retake the math placement assessment and be placed directly in Math 8 for next year, please complete the opt out form by Friday, April 5, 2024.

Kirkwood teachers review all curricular areas regularly to ensure instruction meets the needs of all students and is aligned with Missouri Learning Standards. A review of middle school math courses began in the 2021-22 school year, resulting in two new courses for eighth graders - Math 8 and Algebra I

Students who are proficient in Math 8 skills will have the option to enroll in Algebra I. An overview of our placement process can be found below:

    • Beginning the week of February 20, current seventh graders will take an assessment to determine proficiency in applying Math 8 skills. While there is no expectation to prepare for the assessment, resources are available for students interested in studying (see FAQ).
    • Assessment results will be shared with families at the beginning of March.
    • Students who show proficiency in applying Math 8 skills can take Algebra I in eighth grade.
    • After reviewing test results, students may retake the assessment in April if they choose to do so.
    • Students who do not demonstrate proficiency on the February or April assessment but are still interested in taking Algebra I as an eighth grader have the option to take Math 8 virtually in the summer.
    • Successful completion of the Math 8 summer course allows students to enroll in Algebra I for 8th grade.

A short informational video about the  8th Grade Math Placement Process can be found here. If you have additional questions, please feel free to reach out or to attend the Math Placement Process Open House at KHS in the cafeteria on October 10, from 6:00-7:30.
