Students from Tillman Elementary and Robinson Elementary took the top two spots respectively in the Area-Wide Elementary School Battle of the Books.  This year’s competition featured teams of students from 19 area schools who battled it out at Dressel Elementary School.

The Tillman team was coached by Library Media Specialist Elizabeth Curtis and third grade teacher Lauren Nixon. Tillman team members are: Eden Arthur, Avery Bokermann, Emma Daugherty, Grace Follett, Allison Hurtt, Birdie Kelley, Ivan Ryazanov, Lilly Smith, Ella van Bergen, and Sawyer van Bergen.

North Glendale BookMasters Team finished second and is coached by Library Media Specialist Carrie Fogle. Team members are: Kali Heinz, Emily Kronable, Alice Osmundson, Helen McIntosh, Charlotte Byrne, Luke Wellinghoff, Kyle Markham, Paul Wellinghoff, Miriam Austin, and Mary Weitekamp.

Keysor, Robinson and Westchester Elementary Schools also had teams compete in the book battle.

This annual event promotes a love of reading among students in grades 3-5 by encouraging students to read a list of 10 books from classics to new award winners in a variety of genres and dealing with a wide range of themes and topics. Students are challenged to remember information about the plots, characters, and settings in the books. By participating, they also learn cooperation and dedication as they compete in a team of 10 students to represent their schools. The KSD students have been reading and studying the details of the books for months. Each school’s Library Media Specialist served as a coach, and hosted practice sessions over the past several months to prepare for the competition.
