Kirkwood High School Journalism Programs Earn National and Regional Accolades

 

Members of the Kirkwood High School Journalism Programs have been recognized and honored with recent Journalism Awards Programs.

 

Three Kirkwood Call Staff Members Win Quill and Scroll Contest

 

Kirkwood High School seniors Ian Reno, David Gaither and Mason Heller were recognized in the Quill and Scroll 2024 Writing, Photo and Multimedia Contest.

 

Ian Reno earned First Place in the Political Writing Category

 

David Gaither earned Second Place in the News Magazine Front Page Design Category

 

Mason Heller earned Honorable Mention in the Feature Writing Category

Kirkwood High School Journalism Students Win Group and Individual Awards in National Federation of Press Women’s 2024 At-Large high School Communications Contest

 

KHS journalism students earned multiple awards in the National Federation of Press Women’s 2024 At-Large High School Communications Contest. The contest allows for entries of work completed during the 2022-23 school year. Therefore, some KHS students are now graduates.

 

Students Winning Awards include:

 

KHS senior David Gaither earned First Place for Cartooning for “It’s always an issue with you”

 

KHS senior Khadija Khan earned First Place for Review for “Summer on the Big Screen”

 

For their first-place finish, they will move on to the national contest. Winners of the nationwide contest will be announced May 1, 2024. For more information on the National Federation of Press Women At-Large Contest, please visit: https://www.nfpw.org/high-school-contest

  • Natalie Hosto, Honorable Mention for Graphics/Photo Illustration for “2024 Election: Don’t worry; it’s next year”
  • Tess Hubbard, Honorable Mention for Sports Photo for “Turkey Day Games”
  • Claire Meyer, Honorable Mention for Yearbook Layout for “Varsity Boys Basketball”
  • Jane Roy, Honorable Mention for Columns/Blogs for “Oldie but a Goodie”
  • Jane Roy, Third Place for Editorial for “Call Ed: Too Close to Home”
  • Josie Sausville, Honorable Mention for Yearbook Copywriting for “Luka McGuire”

 

 

Kirkwood High School Students Have Strong Showing at State Journalism Convention

 

On Wednesday, March 27, students from the KHS journalism programs traveled to the University of Missouri for the annual “J Day at Mizzou.” This annual event is an opportunity for aspiring student journalists from high schools across the state to hear from and meet with professionals in the field of journalism. Students can choose from four sessions featuring dozens of journalism-related workshops and learn hands-on from a variety of professionals. Multiple class blocks offering nearly three dozen sessions ranging from yearbook to newspaper/magazine to broadcast, photography, current events, and trending topics.

 

In addition, dozens of KHS Call and Pioneer students won awards at J Day. They are:
