Over 200 Students Participate in 5th Annual Unified Night Lights
On a picture-perfect evening Wednesday, September 29, over 200 Kirkwood School District students stormed the field to participate in the 5th annual Unified Night Lights event at Kirkwood High School in the E.L. Lyons Memorial Stadium.
The event recreated the excitement of a traditional football game. Hundreds of students came together in a unified flag football event. People with and without disabilities played together – side-by-side – shoulder-to-shoulder.
The KHS Varsity football team, cheerleaders, dance team members, and the band partnered for this event. Students cheered from the track, played instruments from the pep band section in the bleachers, and ran numerous touchdowns on the field. The philosophy behind the event is that sports provide a path to friendships and understand and help break down barriers.
Prior to the event, the participants enjoyed a pre-game meal courtesy of Mike Duffy’s and the Kirkwood School District Foundation. Pioneer Bakery sponsored attendance prizes including t-shirts and cookies.
